With the demand for education that is focused on logistics, a few schools are creating programs specifically for rank-and-file warehouse employees. Companies want them to be aware of how their jobs affect customers and how their work within one department can affect operations at other locations, says Kathleen Hedland, director of education and research for the Council of Supply Chain Management Professionals.
There are a variety of degree options, however they all provide foundation courses on basic concepts such as supply chain management and operations, procurement, transportation networks, inventory management and warehousing. Some universities offer specializations in e-commerce, retail logistics and logistics analysis, transportation and global logistics management.
Graduates are prepared to work in roles as logisticians, supply chain managers buying agents, industrial production managers, and distribution managers. Some colleges offer hybrid or online courses which combine classroom instruction with virtual learning opportunities. This format is appealing to employees who have the flexibility of their schedules and are in a position to not attend traditional classes. Some online-only courses offer associate degrees or certificates in addition to bachelor’s or master’s degrees.
